Buff tailed Bumble bee

Bumble Bees

Bumble bees differ in appearance from honeybees in that they are larger, hairy and less aggressive.

The bumble bee is a gentle creature, which will not sting unless provoked.

It is responsible for a lot of the pollination in this country.

The nest rarely has more than 200 bees at its peak in late summer.

In recent years there has been some press coverage over the loss of bumblebees and the possible extinction of some subspecies. This may be due to changes in farming practices, changes in the way chemicals are used in the garden or other environmental pressures. However, whenever possible they should be protected.

Only in extreme cases do we destroy colonies of bumble bees. Usually it is possible to live with them with very little difficulty.

It is also sometimes possible to move the nest to a less problematic area.
